What A Difference A Tree Makes
Copenhagen based Coco Hotel and parent company Cofoco wants to make a positive difference in the world and that is why fruit trees are planted on behalf of hotel guests in vulnerable areas of Mexico for the benefit of the climate, the environment and the local communities.
When a guest books a room on Coco’s website, a tree is donated on their behalf. The stay becomes CO2 neutral as a tree absorbs around 1 ton of CO2 during its lifetime.
How does it all happen?
In Veracruz, there is a collaboration with landowner Marcos Aguilar, who is also Cofoco’s coffee partner. Aguilar is a well-known climate change activist and for the last 15 years, he and the cooperative have been planting trees, which provides jobs, education and crops for the locals. Cofoco and Coco Hotel are dedicated to a sustainable future and are working on several initiatives aimed at securing positive change that is beneficial for the environment.
Trees spend the first year in a nursery in Tejeria, Veracruz. Species are: avocado, lime, guanabana and allspice – native species. The region in which they are grown is a cloud forest (‘bosque mesofilo d montaña') which has a high level of species diversity and contributes positively to the rainwater catchment system. It is clear that in order to restore nature it is important to work hand-in-hand with the local community. After a year, trees are planted in terrain so that in the second year, when the tree gives its first crop, seeds are taken back to the nursery in order to be able to plant a new tree.
Started in 2019 with 30,000 trees, it has been expanded up to 300,000 from Cofoco and it is possible to expand up to 1 million fruit trees.
